Andrea Mundie’s life was forever changed when she received the devastating news: Stage 4 cancer. The diagnosis, which came in 2022, left her reeling, both physically and emotionally. But even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. And for Mundie, that hope came in the form of a surprise home makeover, courtesy of a group of selfless volunteer painters from Student Works Painting.
A Community United in Kindness
Mundie, a mother of four from North Vancouver, British Columbia, had almost lost all sense of normalcy after her diagnosis. Her days were filled with endless doctor’s appointments, grueling treatments, and the constant worry of what the future held. But on one fateful day, a glimmer of light broke through the darkness. A group of nearly 40 volunteer painters from Student Works Painting arrived at her doorstep, armed with rollers, paintbrushes, and a shared determination to make a difference.

The Power of Paint: A Home Makeover with a Purpose
Over the course of several hours, the volunteer painters worked tirelessly to transform Mundie’s home into a warm and welcoming haven. They scraped, sanded, primed, and painted every inch of the exterior, applying two coats of a soothing cream-colored paint that seemed to wash away all her worries. As the final brushstrokes dried, Mundie stepped outside to reveal a home she barely recognized.
“Something as simple as paint just changes the whole look of everything,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. “It’s like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I feel like I can finally take a deep breath again.”
The home makeover was more than just a cosmetic facelift; it was a testament to the power of community and the human spirit. It was a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there were still good people in the world, people who cared enough to roll up their sleeves and make a difference.
A Lasting Legacy of Kindness
The home makeover was just the beginning of a long-term relationship between Mundie and the team at Student Works Painting. The company, which trains young painters while giving back to the community, had been looking for a special project to sink their brushes into. When they heard about Mundie’s story, they knew they had found their perfect match.

“It’s a bit more than just a painting business,” said Tomoki Okamura, district manager at Student Works Painting. “We want to show that affection to the community, more than just painting houses. We want to make a lasting difference in people’s lives.”
And make a difference they did. The home makeover not only transformed Mundie’s home, but it also transformed her outlook on life. It reminded her that she was not alone in her fight against cancer, that there were still good people in the world who cared.
As Mundie herself said, “Receiving kindness and accepting help from others has been a game-changer for me. It’s taught me that I don’t have to do this alone, that there are people out there who care, who want to help.”
The home makeover was a shining example of the impact that one small act of kindness can have on someone’s life. It was a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope, always a glimmer of light on the horizon.
And for Mundie and her family, that hope will continue to shine bright for years to come, a constant reminder of the power of community, kindness, and a fresh coat of paint.

As the old adage goes, “A home is not just a roof over your head, it’s a place where love resides.” For Mundie and her family, their home was more than just a physical structure; it was a symbol of hope, a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there was always a light at the end of the tunnel. And thanks to the selfless efforts of the volunteer painters from Student Works Painting, that light will continue to shine bright for years to come.
